Town Hall Project is a non profit organization founded in 2016 with the aim to make lawmakers more accountable to their constituents. Our research, map, and advocacy has helped mobilize countless Americans to over 25,000 town halls and other lawmaker events.
Town Hall Project — Lead Developer
The Town Hall Project tracked and published every public town hall held by members of Congress, making constituent access to elected officials searchable and visible at a national scale. When I joined in early 2017, the project was a shared Google doc maintained by volunteers. I built the original website and interactive map, then served as lead developer as it scaled into a nationally recognized civic data resource.
Within months, 100,000 people had used the site to find their nearest town hall. The project was covered by the Washington Post, New York Times, LA Times, the BBC, MSNBC, Politico, Pod Save the People, and PBS. The Missing Member Report — a public accountability scorecard showing 193 members of Congress had held zero town halls in the first five months of 2017 — made congressional responsiveness to constituents a documented, visible fact. Town halls became a primary pressure point in the 2017 fight to preserve the Affordable Care Act — the project's data made visible which members were showing up to listen to their constituents during that debate, and which weren't. In 2018, 44 candidates who took the Town Hall Pledge to hold a minimum of four town halls per year won their races.
Over two years the project partnered with 50+ organizations including the ACLU, Sierra Club, Indivisible, and March for Our Lives, launched a 501(c)(3) Education Fund reaching students in 49 states, and expanded coverage to mayoral races and 100,000+ state legislative races.
